How much does a driveway cost in Redcar?

Updated

Two quotes for the same Redcar drive can differ by thousands. This guide shows where the money goes, so you can tell a fair price from a corner cut.

In short

The cost of a Redcar drive comes down to five things: the surface, the area, how much has to be dug out, how the water is drained and whether you need a new crossing. Gravel is usually the lowest-cost surface and resin bound the highest, with tarmac and block paving between. Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council prices each crossing per site.

Here is where the money goes.

The surface

The surface is the part you see and the easiest to compare. Gravel in a stabilising grid is usually the lowest-cost option, tarmac and block paving sit in the middle, and resin bound is usually the dearest. Price is quoted by area, so a 25m² single space and a 60m² frontage for three cars are very different jobs even in the same material. Smaller drives tend to cost more per square metre, because the skip, the machinery and the set-up are the same whatever the size.

We would rather not print a price per square metre: national averages ignore what is under your drive, and that is where Redcar jobs differ most.

Extras that move the price

  • Removing an old drive, especially thick concrete.
  • Excavation depth, which depends on the ground and the surface.
  • Drainage: channel drains, soakaways or a permeable base.
  • Edging and borders in blocks or setts.
  • UV-stable resin for coastal homes, which costs more than standard resin.
  • Steps and walls.
  • A new or wider crossing, priced by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council after it assesses the site. There is no fixed fee, so ask the council for its figure early.

Coastal considerations that affect cost

Near the seafront, spending a little more on UV-stable resin, stainless or aluminium edging and grids for gravel avoids early replacement. That is money well spent.

Comparing quotes

Ask each firm that quotes for the area, excavation depth, sub-base, surface specification, edging, drainage, waste removal and guarantee in writing. A quote missing several of these is not comparable.

Repairs

If your drive is sound underneath, a repair such as re-laying a sunken area or resurfacing worn tarmac can cost much less than a new drive. See driveway repairs.

Common questions

What is the cheapest drive?

Gravel in a stabilising grid is usually the lowest-cost surface, and it is permeable, so it avoids the front-garden planning rule.

Is resin worth the extra in Redcar?

If you want a smooth, permeable finish and choose a UV-stable resin, it lasts well.

Is the dropped kerb included in drive quotes?

Usually not. The council prices it separately.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Groundwork: excavation, sub-base, drainage and waste.
